Girls' self defense

Self defense 2013

On Monday the 27th the Rimu year 8 girls had the opportunity to take a self defense course. The course was based on making ourselves safe and keeping it that way. We learn't what to do in a dangerous situation and how to get ourselves out of that situation. All of us had a go at new punches and kicks to help ourselves escape when a person has hold of you. Ali, our instructor, told us about all the natural weapons we have around us in our ever day lives.

We talked about the different situations we could be put in and we also discussed real life situations of real woman. She told us how important it is to speak up and let people know it's not ok to touch us without our consent. Our course was based giving each girl the confidence not just to fight back, but to have the courage to stand up for ourselves and get the help we deserve.

She explained how she felt that the woman of today aren't powerful or are portrayed  as just as mum's who should just cook and clean, Ali also went on to tell us that woman do have more rights now day but there are still things that undermined the power of ladies. She really got us to understand the power and rights we have and just because they are men does not mean we can't fight back.

I personally believe that this is one of the most important courses for girls to ever go through. The amount of knowledge, skill, confidence and power we learn in 2 days is not describable. It's something you remember forever and will also benefit from whether or not you are put into that sort of situation. I'm very thankful and appreciative to have this opportunity.
